Disney’s newest CG animation film, Moana, is not your typical Disney fairy tale of girl falls in love with a prince and a happy ever after ending. It follows a Hawaiian chieftain’s daughter journey to reclaim her wayfaring heritage and save her people. This is an adventure story that is sure to delight and inspire the whole family.
We saw the movie in 3-D which adds to viewer’s experience. Moana cuts a graceful and blithe figure and added to the movie’s charm. The movie creators also captured the light of the ocean as well as made the ocean a real, living being. In fact, the ocean was Moana’s best friend as it called out to her and got her back on numerous occasions.
Disney took great measures in portraying the Polynesian culture and traditions. What better way to showcase the Polynesian spirit than in Moana? She is a strong central character and throughout the film showed her determination, courage, and perseverance in the face of surmounting odds and trials. My boys fell in love with Moana, a young Hawaiian chieftain who didn’t allow herself to be called a “princess.” She is also a positive role model for my young daughter. Moana is quick, smart, and brave. Her challenge was to bring back Maui, a demigod with an attitude, and restore the heart of the island, which is no small easy feat.
Moana’s bravery spanned across the ocean as she learned to become the leader her people needed her to be. The Disney songs were uplifting and were composed by the renowned Lin-Manual Miranda who is the main figure behind the famous, “Hamilton” and Mark Mancina who worked the Disney animation, “Tarzan” and Broadway musical, “The Lion King.” My favorite song in the movie is, “How Far I’ll Go” where Moana listens to the quiet inner voice inside her and ruptures in song.
I highly recommend watching Moana in theatres. This is Moana’s story to be told and Disney did an incredible job with the visuals, characterizations, soundtrack and light humor. Now playing in a theatre near you.
