After painting my first portrait, I was ready to experiment further to see what I can do with my technique and style. I needed a manual in creating masterpieces of portraits. After doing 50,00 different portraits in so-called Portrait Parties, the author, Julia L. Kay created Portrait Revolution to show the all the variety of portrait paintings accomplished by artists throughout the world.
Portrait Revolution delivers an awesome book on how to portray portraits in different mediums, techniques and style. It’s an interesting take on the subject of portraiture, brought down to the level that anyone can have a portrait made of themselves or of another person. The book is full of ideas and examples to learn from.
Portrait Revolution is not for the beginner artist who is just learning how to draw or paint. For those who want to “expand their horizons,” more this is a perfect book for them to look at for portraitures. It takes an intermediate level or some level of artistic ability. When I started trying to draw portraits, I first started with self-portraits and pictures from photographs.
The author emphasizes the importance of expanding horizons as an artist and to pick up new skills in new mediums. An artist may find a new favorite medium to work with in this way. My favorite mediums are pen, pencil, acrylic, watercolor and oils. I would also get ideas from this book about other mediums in how to create portraits.
I see many examples of art and styles that I can emulate in my portrait drawings and paintings and be inspired from in Portrait Revolution. I actually have a new project that I would like to work on which showcases portraits of Filipino American women. The Portrait Revolution presents new ideas and styles that I may consider in depicting portraits of my subject. I would like to focus on their beauty, pride and personality most of all in my subjects.
In conclusion, the Portrait Revolution is a valuable resource for me and one that I will use for my present works. It gives detailed explanations of the portraits and methods used. I find it very helpful in my projects and to keep it by my side for reference and guidance. For more information and where to buy this book, click here.
